he education programme begins: the first 2 classes are created, educating 8 children with deafblindness in Bucharest and Cluj.

The first Romanian teachers attend a Professional Development Programme in U.K.

2001

SIR is registered in Romania as a non-governmental organisation and signs the first Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Education.

2002

SIR organises the first training course attended by 30 special education teachers working with deafblind children. The teachers network is established.

2004

SIR signs the second Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Education.  Romanian teachers attend a Professional Development Programme in U.K.

2005

SIR trains another 30 special education teachers working with deafblind children.

2005

2006

3 classes with 52 deafblind children. SIR develops a team of 11 national trainers in the field of deafblindness. Romanian legislation recognises deafblindness as a distinct disability. (Law 448/2006).

2007

7 classes with 68 deafblind children. The Early Intervention programme starts in Bucharest.

2008

SIR supports the development of the first National Curriculum for the Education of Deafblind Children. 19 classes with 81 deafblind children, in 11 special schools throughout Romania. The Early Intervention Programme is extended to Oradea.

2008

2009

33 classes with 134 deafblind children, in 15 special schools in Romania. SIR trains another 25 special education teachers working with deafblind children. SIR signs the third Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Education. The Early Intervention Programme is extended to Timisoara

SIR receives the Recognition Award and the Practitioners’ Award during the ERSTE Foundation Social Integration Awards.

5 classes with 140 deafblind children, in 15 special schools in Romania.

2011

SIR develops the first Curriculum for Early Intervention for Deafblind Children.

2012

SIR begins the Vocational Programme in Bucharest, Galati and Iasi.

2013

The Early Intervention Programme is extended to Iasi. 49 classes with 181 children, in 15 special schools in Romania. SIR receives the Excellency Award for the Involvement in the Education of Children with Special Needs during the Edumanager.ro Awards.

2014

Two more vocational centres – mini-typographies were opened in Arad and in Timisoara.

2015

The educational project ends successfully. At that time, 54 classes from the whole country provide educational services to children with deafblindness.

SIR organises The 16th Deafblind International World Conference where Cristiana Salomie, SIR Director, receives Deafblind International Lifetime Achievement Award

SIR launches the Research Report on Early Intervention for Children with Sensory Impairments – Best Practice Model 2007-2014.

SIR organises the International Conference on Early Intervention for Children with Sensory Impairments

Another vocational centre is established in Craiova and the one in Timisoara is extended.

2017

In March, SIR closed the Early Intervention programme, 234 babies received specialized therapies in our centres in Bucharest, Oradea, Timisoara and Iasi;

03 581 babies benefited for hearing screening and 17 049 for ophthalmological testing in hospitals for Bucharest, Oradea, Timisoara and Iasi
