Initiation course in the field of deafblindness for Romanian sign language interpreters

Surdocecitate în dactileme și în Braille

Sense International Romania is implementing the project "The Voice of People with Deafblindness in Romania" through the Active Citizens Fund Romania, funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway through the EEA Grants 2014-2021. Among other things, within this project, we will organize a course on deafblindness addressed to Romanian sign language interpreters.

Why a course on deafblindness for interpreters?

Law no. 48/2006 on the protection and promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities, republished, with subsequent amendments and additions, states:

"The central and local authorities and public or private institutions ensure, for direct relations with persons with hearing disabilities or deafblindness, authorized interpreters of the mimico-gestural language or the specific language of the person with deafblindness. (Article 69, paragraph 1)"

"The mimico-gestural language and the specific language of the person with deafblindness are officially recognized as specific means of communication for persons with hearing disabilities or deafblindness. (Article 69, paragraph 3)"

Therefore, this course meets the need for training and information for Romanian sign language interpreters regarding the specificities of deafblindness as a distinct disability, the means and methods of communication in the specific language of a deafblind person, as well as the necessary adaptations in the interpretation process.

Why participate in this course?

After completing this course, Romanian sign language interpreters will have knowledge of the fundamental elements related to:

  • What deafblindness means, its main types and causes, basic notions regarding the anatomy and physiology of the senses: vision, hearing, and touch.
  • The specific methods of communication for individuals with deafblindness.
  • Specific adaptations in the interpretation process for people with deafblindness.
  • Fundamental notions regarding orientation and mobility in the context of deafblindness.
  • Romanian legislation regarding deafblindness.
  • The experience of other countries regarding interpreters for people with deafblindness.

Who is the course intended for?

The course is addressed to Romanian sign language interpreters who wish to acquire skills and knowledge in the field of deafblindness. Participants should have a good command of Romanian sign language, with or without authorization as an interpreter in mimico-gestural language or the specific language of the deafblind person.

When and where does the course take place?
