Introduction in Early Intervention for Children with Deafblindness
Early intervention is essential for the development of children with deafblindness or multiple sensory disabilities.
Twenty years after the launch of Sense International Romania’s early intervention program—a program that has changed the lives of hundreds of children and families—we invite you to take part in the first online edition of the course Introduction in Early Intervention for Children with Deafblindness.
Through this course, we aim to provide participants with the fundamental knowledge and basics of early intervention, with the possibility for those interested to explore the subject further in a more advanced course scheduled for 2026.
This introductory course will combine theoretical aspects with practical recommendations for working directly with children with deafblindness or multiple sensory disabilities, addressing topics such as:
- What is early intervention?
- How do we assess a child with deafblindness?
- How can we stimulate and develop a child’s senses?
- What adaptations can we make to the environment?
- How do we communicate with children with deafblindness or multiple sensory disabilities?

Context
In 2005, Sense International Romania launched its early intervention program under a partnership with the Ministry of Education. In Bucharest, Oradea, Timișoara, and Iași, the organization developed partnerships with schools, DGASPCs, and maternity hospitals. It equipped early intervention centers with sensory stimulation devices, supplied maternity wards with hearing screening equipment, trained specialists, organized regular meetings with parents, and developed resources.
In 2022, early intervention was officially included in national legislation. The Methodology regarding the provision of early intervention services for children with sensory disabilities/multiple sensory disabilities, approved by Order no. 3975 of June 7, 2022, and published in the Official Gazette, Part I, no. 622 of June 24, 2022, now allows the establishment of new early intervention services across the country.
